07/09/2010 - Pubs face closure in licence plans
Bars could be forced to close or slash their opening hours as part of a Government plan to tackle licensing laws and reduce pressure on the NHS.
Councils looking into renewing or granting licences will be able to take A&E admissions into account for the first time when making their decision.
Hospital bosses will also have their say on which bars have an impact on resources and are likely to result in more admissions through drink.
The overhaul will allow councils to relieve pressure on the NHS by closing or preventing the opening of a bar or pub which is having an impact on services.
Bars could also be told to close earlier as councils attempt to tackle the multimillion-pound burden faced by health services as a result of alcohol misuse.
The plans are part of a wider overhaul of licensing laws by Home Office minister James Brokenshire aimed at reducing the impact of alcohol abuse.
