17/02/2011 - Company fined over worker injury
A Wimbledon-based carpentry firm has been fined £15,000 after one of its workers cut off part of his right index finger when using a circular saw.
Pentcroft Ltd, of Garratt Lane, was also ordered to pay costs of £3,203 after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety regulations at the City of London Magistrates' Court.
The court heard that Simon Lear, who severed his finger in March 2010, was allowed to use woodworking machinery despite the fact he and a number of his colleagues had not received the appropriate training.
It was also revealed that a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector then witnessed another employee at Pencroft's carpentry and joinery workshop using a spindle moulder, a potentially dangerous machine, without safety precautions in place.
An HSE investigation found that the company failed to give Mr Lear and his co-workers safety training and information, or provide adequate supervision. It also became apparent the company had no knowledge of the formal training that wood machinists should receive.
