25/02/2011 - Farm owners fined over worker fall
A 67-year-old worker literally fell victim to lax safety standards at a farm near Holsworthy when he plunged 12 feet through the roof of a barn he was working on.
Self -employed Roger Tryner ended up with a broken collarbone, concussion and severe cuts and bruises.
He had been asked to check the roof for loose sheeting when the accident happened on Mambury Farm, East Putford, in September 2009.
North Devon magistrates in Barnstaple fined the farm owners £8,000 and told them to pay the prosecution's costs of £5,000.
It admitted breaking regulation 6(3) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, after the case was brought by the Health and Safety Executive.
