28/02/2011 - Police hunt for shop robbers

Police are appealing for witnesses after a robbery at a shop in Newcastle.

The incident happened at around 9pm on Thursday February 24, when a man went into the Spar store at Moulton Court, Blakelaw, and demanded cash from the shop assistant.

He then revealed what is believed to be a black handgun, although it is not known whether the weapon was real or an imitation.

The shop assistant opened the till and the offender grabbed cash from inside before leaving the store. Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

The offender is described as wearing a dark coloured hooded tracksuit top, zipped up over his face, and a black balaclava. He also wore dark coloured tracksuit bottoms.

Detective Inspector Dave Culverwell, Newcastle CID, said: "No-one was injured but obviously the shop assistant was left shocked by the incident.

"We're carrying out extensive enquiries into this robbery and the investigation is still in the early stages.

"The shop is next to social clubs and other shops and so there will have been people in the area at the time.

"I'd encourage anyone who witnessed the robbery or saw this man acting suspiciously before it took place or running off afterwards to get in touch. Anyone with information about who is responsible should also contact police."

Anyone with information should contact police on 03456 043 043 ext 69191 for the attention of Newcastle CID, or alternatively contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
