24/02/2011 - Power firm fined over man's death
A power company has been fined £130,000 after a man suffered fatal injuries when a 700kg bale of straw fell on to him.
Driver Gary Darnell from Ely, in Cambridgeshire, died after the incident at EPR Ely Limited's site on the Elean Power Station in Sutton, in September 2008.
The bale of straw fell from a lorry while the 53-year-old was unloading straw with an overhead gantry crane. He suffered fatal injuries from mechanical asphyxiation, Cambridge Magistrates' Court was told.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) decided to prosecute after finding a number of breaches over the movement of straw bales around the loading and storage area.
Along with the £130,000 fine, EPR Ely Ltd of Woodbridge was ordered to pay costs of £30,735.
