09/02/2011 - QV Foods fined over box accident
A food company has been fined £15,000 after a woman worker was badly hurt by a crate falling from a forklift truck.
The 43-year-old woman, from Holbeach, was labelling boxes in a yard at QV Foods when a wooden box of potatoes fell from the truck as it was being emptied into a skip. She suffered a fractured knee and badly bruised back and had to spend time in hospital. After several months off work, the woman - who does not want to be named - has returned to work at the factory.
The Health and Safety Executive took QV Foods, of Manor Farm, Holbeach Hurn, Lincolnshire, to court after the accident on May 22, 2009. At Kings Lynn Magistrates' Court, the company admitted it failed to ensure the welfare at work, health and safety of its staff and broke Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. It was ordered to pay a fine of £15,000 and £4,606 in costs.
