10/02/2011 - World famous cake shop closes down
World famous Cambridge cake shop, Fitzbillies, has shut, with a sign in the window merely saying "we are closed".
Fitzbillies's owner Penny Thomson told a local newspaper that "very difficult" economic times forced it to close it.
The shop, set up in Trumpington Street in 1922, had been a major attraction for decades, with students, tourists and the local community waiting in long queues for Fitzbillies's renowned Chelsea Buns, fruitcakes and sponges.
It had always managed to closely guard the secret recipes, most notably the one for its sticky Chelsea Buns, to protect the uniqueness of its delicious delights.
Its cakes were also sent worldwide by mail order.
Students greeted the news of Fitzbillies's closure with dismay, with one of the pupils calling it a "disaster", while another said it was a "tragedy".
