12/01/2011 - Pub landlord injured in fryer blast
An investigation has been launched after a fryer at a South Shields put overheated and exploded, causing serious injuries to its landlord.
Colin Purdy suffered 40 per cent burns to his head and upper body after being splashed with hot oil from the fryer in the kitchen of the County Hotel in Sunderland Road.
He was immediately taken to the South Tyneside Hospital from where he was moved to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary for further treatment.
The blast shook the building and ripped off doors, eyewitnesses told local media.
Fire crews from South Shields were called in to put out the blaze and are now looking into the cause of the blaze as are South Tyneside Council.
The County Hotel is owned by the Sizzling Pub Company which said it is looking into the incident and insisted that workplace safety remained a priority.
