27/01/2011 - Steelwork firm fined after accident

A steelwork company has been fined £12,500 after an employee lost one of his fingers and badly damaged two others in a drilling machine accident.

B&B Group Ltd, of Leigh in Wigan, was also ordered to pay costs of £1,703 at Trafford Magistrates' Court in Sale after it admitted breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

The court heard how the 46-year-old worker was using the drill to make holes in an iron bar when the glove he was wearing on his right hand became entangled in the equipment's mechanism, pulling his hand into the machine.

His index finger was severed below the first joint, his middle finger was badly cut and his ring finger was dislocated as a result of the accident.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found the company had failed to provide a machine guard around the drill bit to protect workers.
