25/01/2011 - Twelve hurt in dental lab explosion

A suspected gas explosion at a dental laboratory near Wolverhampton injured several members of staff, police said.

The 43-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital following the blast, which is thought to have been caused by a gas cylinder on the site in Bilbrook Road, Codsall. Twelve employees were on the site at the time of the explosion on Friday afternoon and suffered minor injuries, police added.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "Police were called to a dental laboratories in Bilbrook Road, Codsall, at 3.45pm. It was reported there had been an explosion, believed to have been caused by a gas cylinder on the premises. There were 12 members of staff at the address, some sustaining minor injuries and one woman, believed to be aged 43, has been airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham."

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene along with structural engineers and the Health and Safety Executive. Police said the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
