04/01/2010 - Conference calls taken in the nude

Naked conference calling is more common than one might think, a study has revealed.

According to telecoms giant BT, businessmen and women prefer to take part in telephone conferences while relaxing in their bedrooms wearing underwear, pyjamas, and sometimes nothing at all.

The bathroom was the second most popular location to phone from, with some of the 200 people surveyed saying they had heard crying babies, barking dogs, boiling kettles and flushing toilets while other callers spoke.

A proportion of respondents joined an audio conference while travelling in a train or car, but some chose more exotic locations, such as a beach, a theme park and a ski slope. About 1.4 million journeys were saved in 2008 due to conferencing reducing the need for 700,000 personal meetings, BT claims.

Aaron McCormack, chief executive of BT Conferencing, said: "More people using conferencing is good news for all of us. It brings together any number of people from almost anywhere in the world. It cuts travelling time, costs and CO2 emissions and can assist us all to maintain a sensible work-life balance."
