- More than a quarter of hair and beauty professionals started their career as a Saturday worker
- 50 per cent of workers in the hair and beauty industry followed a family member into the profession
- 17 per cent of hair and beauty professionals practised on family and friends before qualifying
- Making people happy is best part of the job for hair and beauty professionals
In the hair and beauty industry, more than a quarter (28 per cent) of professionals found their career by starting out as a Saturday worker, reveals new research by Direct Line for Business1. The industry is also a family affair, as half of hair and beauty professionals (50 per cent) followed a family member into their chosen career.
Seeing first-hand what the career offers and the opportunities available is key to attracting people into the industry. Just one in twenty (five per cent) hair and beauty professionals worked in an entirely different profession before opting for a career in hair and beauty.
Apprenticeships (30 per cent) and college courses (30 per cent) are the most popular choices for people to get their foothold in the industry. While learning the trade, people use their friends and family as models, with one in six (17 per cent) practising their rudimentary skills on their nearest and dearest.
When it comes to what the best thing is about working in the industry, making people happy came out on top (40 per cent), followed by meeting new people (26 per cent) and creating inspiring styles (17 per cent).
