IT consultant insurance that works for you

As an IT consultant, you are relied upon to handle confidential data and provide sound advice that benefits your clients. You are expected to get things right, and if you make a mistake, you could negatively impact your clients’ business.

In your role, you may also be required to work at your client’s premises. If you were to accidentally break something, you could be liable for the costs of repairing or replacing the item. That’s why it’s important to have the right insurance in place, so you’re covered if something goes wrong.

At Direct Line for Business, we let you create your own insurance policy so that you can get cover for the particular risks associated with your line of work. Using our simple online tool, you can pick from a range of cover options to build a policy that’s right for your business.

You can download your policy documents immediately, so that you can show proof of your insurance to your clients.

Your cover options

Add any of the following cover options to your IT Consultants’ and Services Insurance to create a policy tailored to your business needs. These covers are subject to policy conditions and limits.

  • Professional indemnity

IT consultants are continually called upon to give professional advice and solve complex problems. If you make a mistake, or give advice that is deemed to be negligent, you could face some difficult consequences. Professional indemnity insurance covers the legal and compensation costs you may have to pay if a client makes a claim against you.

At present we do not offer professional indemnity cover to people working in computer-aided design and internet service providers. This may change over time, as we continually review our policies.

  • Public liability

Public liability covers you if you accidentally damage a client’s property or someone is injured on your premises or by your equipment. An example of this could be someone tripping on tangled wires from your laptop. If they pursued legal action, public liability insurance would cover your costs. We can offer cover from £1 million to £10 million.

  • Employers' liability

Employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement if you take on employees, even temporarily. Visit our employers’ liability page to learn more about exceptions to this rule.

This covers the costs you have to pay if an employee gets injured or becomes ill because of work they have done for you. Even something as simple as an employee damaging their back through improper lifting could cost you dearly, especially if they allege it’s because of poor training. At Direct Line for Business, we will cover you for £10 million, as standard.

  • Buildings cover

If there is an insured event such as flood or fire where you work and the space becomes damaged, buildings insurance will cover the costs of the repairs. This includes debris removal and architect’s fees.

We include breakdown cover as standard (for items forming part of the building), so if your equipment breaks down and you need to repair or replace any items, this policy will cover the costs. Equipment could include boilers and fire/burglar alarms. The breakdown must not be due to wear and tear.

  • Contents and stock

With our contents and stock cover, you can insure all of the electrical items, business equipment, furniture, art and documents used by your business as well as any stock.

We also offer another cover option that allows you to insure items on the go if you work from multiple locations or travel. For instance, if your work laptop fell on the ground and the keypad stopped working, we’ll cover the cost of replacing the item so you can continue working without too much disruption.

  • Business interruption

If your premises is damaged by fire or flood, business interruption will cover the costs of setting up elsewhere, and the loss of turnover if you can’t work.

If you work at your client’s site and their premises are damaged, you’ll have to find somewhere else to work, as well as possibly lose business with them while they can’t work. Business interruption would cover the extra cost of setting up somewhere else, as well as the turnover from losing this client.

Our business interruption cover can insure you if you or one of your key employees becomes seriously disabled and is unable to continue work, we will cover the incurred costs, up to £25,000, to minimise any interruption to the business.

  • Theft of takings

If your business handles cash and cheques for your clients, this will cover you in case of theft. This includes business takings stolen from you or anyone working for you.

  • Cyber cover

Cyber insurance is important if you handle client data or rely on computer systems for your work. We cover you for the costs you face as a result of cyber crime, compensation and defence costs for a data breach or unintentional transmission of a virus, as well as loss of income following a cyber attack.

We also provide access to specialist support for PR and crisis management, identity theft assistance, IT forensics and data recovery experts, and specialist advice to prevent viruses or hacking attacks after an incident.

  • Legal expenses
