Professional Indemnity for IT Consultants

Get your advice covered

Providing reliable, professional advice is a crucial part of any IT consultant’s role.

For the most part this is exactly what you provide your clients with. But even the most reputable IT consultant can make mistakes. If your client thinks that the advice you have given them has been negligent, caused them a financial loss or hurt their reputation, they could try to claim compensation from your business.

Many clients, particularly local authorities and large companies, will even ask you to provide proof of professional indemnity insurance before they agree to work with you. So make sure you've got the cover you need.

Insure your business against some of the most common IT claims

With some of the most likely IT claims covered, including system security breaches, installation failures and human error, our Professional Indemnity Insurance is well suited to those working in Computer Programming, IT Consultancy, Software Engineering and Software Consultancy sectors.

Our Policy Covers:

  • Virus cover up to £500,000, in case you accidently pass on a virus to a third party (assuming that it’s not been created by you)
  • Loss of or damage to digitised data and other documents, and any claims which may be made against you because of this
  • Defence costs, such as lawyers, experts and other court costs, that are payable in addition to the policy limit
  • Claims made against you due to any civil liability
  • Compensation up to the chosen policy limit
  • Public relations and crisis management costs
  • Unauthorised access, and denial of service attacks (DDoS)

How does the cover work?

If you're sued for a professional consultancy mishap which is covered by your policy, our Professional Indemnity Insurance will pay out for the defence costs you may need such as lawyers, experts and other court costs, which are payable in addition to the policy limit.

You'll also be covered if you need representation at any inquiry which is directly related to any claim or circumstance and for any compensation up to the policy limit that you choose.

When do you need it?
Breach of professional duty When you or your business has a duty of care to a client, but doesn’t live up to that standard, such as incorrect advice or making a mistake in your work
Unintentional breach of confidentiality If your business keeps confidential client information and accidentally releases it to a third party without the client's consent, or it's stolen, your business could be sued
The loss of or damage to documents Information kept on computers and on file could be,damaged, lost in the post, or even stolen due to negligence while in your care
Unintentional infringement of intellectual property rights Your business could be sued if it accidentally violates a copyright, patent, or trademark, including imitation or passing another's products/services off as your own
Libel or slander Writing or saying statements that damage someone's reputation could lead to your business being sued

How long will I be covered for?

Once you take out our Professional Indemnity Insurance, you're covered for work you've done from that moment on, so long as you keep renewing your policy. You can also get retro-active cover, so your business is insured from the date you first bought a professional indemnity policy. But you'll need to keep a record of any previous policies.
